That CQC report on patient safety is expected at the end of November. Meanwhile the scope of the ongoing independent review of maternity services at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust by midwife Donna Ockenden was considerably broadened to include details of all stillbirths, maternal and neonatal deaths and significant harm going back over 20 years.

Kashmir Uppal, a partner specialising in clinical negligence at Shoosmiths said:

‘The ongoing concerns about the Trust's quality and performance in maternity services in particular appear to have been justified in light of this unusual step. I am pleased that this step has been taken as it reflects the seriousness of the problems at the Trust which should now be addressed to ensure that there are improved standards of patient safety in all specialist areas.’

Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust put into special measures

08 November 2018

The entire Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust has been put into special measures by NHS Improvement (NHSI). It is unusual for this step to be taken without a recommendation from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), to which the Trust has been reporting in connection with the performance of maternity and emergency services care at the Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal hospitals.
