It has been reported that there have been at least seven avoidable deaths at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust in less than two years. Michelle, who lost her baby at Northampton General Hospital, is campaigning for safer births (www.campaignforsaferbirths.co.uk/) all over the country and this latest investigation shows the need for awareness in respect of the safety for newborn babies should be more widespread.
However one of the aims for Michelle’s campaign was for there to be an independent investigation, especially in the absence of an inquest, where there is a stillbirth or neonatal death in hospital. Sarah Corser from Shoosmiths says:
“Some of the deaths at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust have never been investigated. Michelle Hemmington has campaigned for this never to happen to any other baby and it is good to see that these tragic deaths will now be subject to a proper investigation with a view to preventing more such tragedies”
