The charges relate to baby deaths and non-fatal collapses at the hospital from June 2015 to June 2016 and follow a review into infant deaths at the neonatal unit at Countess of Chester Hospital in 2017 which could find no definitive explanation for the increased mortality rates.

Kashmir Uppal, partner in Shoosmiths Birmingham medical negligence team, said:

“The full details of what took place in 2015 and 2016 are not yet known. This remains a very difficult time for all the families involved and I can only hope the ongoing police investigation may lead to a greater understanding of what happened.  Any lessons that may be learned once the investigation is concluded should be taken on board by all maternity and neonatal units.”
